The Reality Of Being An Entrepreneur

Rock The Post  finds that It is often surprising talking with people who are interested in starting their own businesses.  For experienced successful entrepreneurs, they often receive words of praise like “You are so lucky!”  Actually, luck has nothing to do with it.  In the entrepreneurship world, you have to work very hard to reach any form of success.  Essentially, being an entrepreneur is not always looking at the good side of business, as there are some very harsh obstacles to surpass being an entrepreneur.”  Being an entrepreneur is not the easy, carefree career path that many believe it to be; it is actually quite the opposite.

Before learning the realities and basic truths about entrepreneurship, let us first understand primarily what an entrepreneur is.  Being an entrepreneur is something many people aspire to be.   Entrepreneurs by nature are full of great ideas.    Similarly, an entrepreneur who has been involved in business for a while is already familiar with their limitations.  They are familiar with the things they are good at, and are aware of their weaknesses, they are also able to hire and designate tasks to employees who they feel will be a great asset to his or her business.

Let us look at both the negative and positive sides of being an entrepreneur:

I. Negative

1) It’s Boundless

Sometimes you may feel unappreciated when you work for someone else, knowing your skills and talents  is what differentiates yourself from other candidates.  In most jobs you can leave the work behind when you go home to enjoy your friends, family and hobbies.  The workload of an entrepreneur is so extreme, that during the early stages you sometimes have to handle everything from being the CFO, CEO, HR person, sales staff, office manager and janitor.  You do several things like writing press releases, contacting new media, researching new markets, cold calling new sales outlets, developing new products and more.  With these roles and duties, you rarely feel like your work is done for the day.

2) It’s Frustrating

Frustrations often arises, especially if you have partnered with someone who does not have your best interest at heart.  Unexplained problems can occur out of the blue, for instance, you have received a shipment of damaged products that you need for a trade show the next day, or perhaps a media appearance has been cancelled due to a natural disaster. These are examples of simple frustrations, that in most cases, you can do nothing about.  As an entrepreneur you need be a quick problem solver because  these situations as it could happen often.  You never know what will happen, and it can be extremely frustrating when your plan is interrupted by something else.

II. Positive

1) It’s Rewarding

You will be filled with joy, both financially and emotionally when you are successful.  Seeing a product you have developed on store shelves or providing successful service to a grateful client, is rewarding and creates a feeling of fulfillment.  It’s pleasing when customers tell you that your product or services has made a difference in their lives.

2) It’s the Chance to Create

Helping other people, leaving something behind and even creating or building something great are factors that drive many entrepreneurs to success.  By doing that, you set a great example for future entrepreneurs, young students, and even some business owners. Watching something that you have developed and created through out the years, and seeing it grow is an amazing success story. This makes all the hard work worth it!

Lastly, an entrepreneur by nature is a risk taker and is often venturing into something where nobody has gone before.  A knowledgeable entrepreneur knows that things do not always happen as planned .  An entrepreneur knows that, unforeseen problems will arise, even if the plan is properly set up.  A true entrepreneur will look at what can be learned from the experience rather than being overpowered. Moreover, an entrepreneur always keeps their eye fixed firmly on what it is they want to achieve.
